How to Clean Your AirPods Like a Pro Apple Staff

AirPods are one of the fantastic earbuds that I have been simping upon for a long time now. Be it listening to podcasts, playing online multiplayer games, or even watching how to grow corn. They work great. But do you know what I hate the most about them? AirPods come with a lot of maintenance. In this guide, I am going to discuss everything that you can do to keep your AirPods and the Charging case clean. But first, why clean them?

Why You Should Spend 1 Minute Every Day to Clean Your AirPods?

The AirPods, be it the pro generations or even the base variants, come in a sneaky small charging case, which, unfortunately, is entirely white in color. Now, even if you are using an AirPods cover, you will still find a lot of dust and grime there, and I hate them for this.

Also, the AirPods themselves easily get dirty and block the entire sound experience. And if your friend is pretty close to you and just randomly uses your AirPods whenever they wish, you better start cleaning first before using them. All it takes is a dedicated 1-Minute and a few tools, and you are good to go.

Cleaning your AirPods helps you maintain hygiene and also improves their overall life. Often, it is the dirt and grime that eventually slips inside the speaker and starts blocking the sound, which starts damaging your AirPods, too.

One forum suggested dipping your AirPods in isopropyl alcohol and then blowing them with a hair dryer; don’t, just don’t do it. You are eventually frying your AirPods. Let me help you.

Tools You’ll Require

  • Microfibre Cloth: No one likes scratches on their AirPods; microfibre cloth is best for cleaning the surface without leaving any scratch marks. If you don’t have one, get it here.
  • Cleaning Brush: No, not your toothbrush, but a soft bristle brush to clean the tiny spaces in your AirPods case and the mesh. Here is the one that I prefer.
  • Isopropyl Alcohol: Great for cleaning your electronics and other gadgets. You can store them for multipurpose uses. Check out the spray option for convenience.

Want to save some money? I read a blog post about the Whoosh Screen Cleaning Kit, which apparently is used in Apple Stores to keep all the display devices clean. You can pair this kit with a cleaning brush from OXO, and you have your mini gadget cleaner ready with you.

How to Clean your AirPods and Charging Case?

You cannot use Isopropyl alcohol as you wish; if you drop even a splash in the AirPods mesh, it is likely to damage your AirPods, and there is no coming back. So, to be clearer and more cautious about how to clean your AirPods and charging case, I have created mini guides for both AirPods and charging cases.

1. Cleaning AirPods

  • Using the microfibre cloth, clean the surface of your AirPod sticks. If you use AirPods Max, you can gently wipe the surface without using any cleaner or Isopropyl alcohol. This step is to remove any visible dirt.
  • To disinfect the AirPod sticks, spray the Whoosh Cleaning Spray or Isopropyl alcohol in small quantities on the microfibre cloth. Then, gently wipe it on the AirPod’s exterior while still avoiding the speaker mesh.
  • Use a soft bristle brush and gently rub off the dirt or grime-like earwax from your AirPods mesh. The actions I follow are to keep my AirPods or AirPods Pro in a titled position to avoid the earwax from falling inside and then brush it towards the outer side. Once you are satisfied with it, shake the AirPods with its face downwards so all the earwax falls down.
  • Rub the mesh gently with a dry and soft microfibre cloth, and your AirPod is now pretty much clean.

2. Cleaning AirPods Charging Case

Cleaning your AirPods charging case is one of the most crucial tasks as despite having a cover, the dust and grime can easily find their place on the glamourous white body.

  • We will start by gently wiping the AirPods charging case with a microfibre cloth to remove dry dust and grime.
  • Using a cotton swab, wipe the interior of the case to remove earwax and other dirt from the inside of the case. You can use the soft bristle brush to dust off the remaining dirt.
  • Now, spray some of the Whoosh cleaning spray or Isopropyl alcohol on the microfibre cloth. We will only use one or two small sprays; overdoing it will not help.
  • Once you are ready, close the case lid and wipe the surface of the AirPods from the outside.
  • In the next step, we will open the case lid and wipe the microfibre cloth on the inside; ensure the cloth is moist and not wet; we don’t want to damage the AirPods charging pins from the inside.

That’s pretty much it; drop your AirPods inside the charging case, dress it up with a nice AirPods cover, and you are ready to rock and roll.

Tips and Precautions:

  1. Do not use sharp objects to clean your AirPods.
  2. Cleaning spray is for cleaning your AirPods, not bathing them. So, use it appropriately as instructed.
  3. Always regularly clean your AirPods. Better care ensures they function the best.
  4. Avoid exposing your AirPods to extreme temperatures or moisture.
