6 Steps: Transfer Data from Android to iPhone

Transferring data from Android to iPhone can be a complex process, and if you miss a few steps, you might end up losing data from both devices. To make it easier for you, I have created a step-by-step guide where I am going to discuss all the steps involved in moving data from your Android to your iPhone device. This should help you complete the process without much of a hassle.

Step 1: Preparing Both the Devices

The first and foremost step is to prepare both the devices. Now, your iPhone is brand new; do not set it up first or do anything with the setup, such as adding your email ID or setting up iCloud.

On your Android device, ensure you have fully updated the software. You can check if there are any new Android updates available by navigating to the “Settings” and looking for “Update” in the search bar. If there is a new update available, update your Android phone so there is no issue later. It is always best to keep both your Android and iPhone devices charged to avoid any interruptions.

We also need to ensure we have a stable WiFi connection so we can easily move the data from your old Android phone to your new iPhone.

Step 2: Download Move to iOS App

Move to iOS is an app developed by Apple to seamlessly transfer your data from your old Android device to your new iPhone. The app creates a private WiFi network between both devices to transfer data without having to reset or format your old Android phone.

For this to work, you need to download the “Move to iOS” app on your Android phone from the Play Store,

  • Open the “Play Store” app on your Android phone
  • Using the search bar, look for the “Move to iOS” app.
  • Download the app on your phone and allow it for all the permissions and access.

Once you install the app, the next step is to make the initial setup on your iPhone. You can launch the Move to iOS app on your Android phone or leave it as it is for now.

Step 3: Initial Setup on your iPhone

Now, let’s turn on our iPhone for the first time. But why the first time? It is because the Move to iOS app doesn’t work when you have already set up your device. If you already own an iPhone and wish to move your Android data on it, you will have to reset the entire device and start from the initial setup. It is because this is the only setup where Apple offers you to transfer data from your Android device to your iPhone.

Once you turn on your iPhone, you will need to fill out some basic details, such as choosing your language, setting up WiFi (most important), and logging in to your iCloud account. Ensure you connect the same WiFi connection to your iPhone as your Android device.

After filling out the details, you will find the “Apps and Data Screen,” and this is where we will begin our transfer process from Android to your new iPhone.

Step 4: The WiFi Bridge – Transfer Data from Android to iPhone

In this step, we will start transferring data from your Android to your iPhone. But first, ensure both devices are connected to the same WiFi network. Here, both devices will create a WiFi bridge to communicate and share data.

On your iPhone, tap on “Generate code,” which you can find when you choose to move data from another device. You are required to enter this code on your Android device.

On your Android phone, open the Move to iOS app and pick the option to transfer data to your iPhone. You will find the option to enter the code to begin the transfer process. Enter the code we generated earlier using your iPhone.

Step 5: Choose the Data to Transfer

On your Android device, you can now find the option to choose the data that you wish to transfer. Here, you can basically transfer everything, such as,

  • Contacts
  • Message history
  • WhatsApp messages
  • Photos and videos
  • Web bookmarks
  • Mail accounts
  • Calendars
  • Free apps that are available on both Google Play and the App Store

Choose the data you wish to transfer, and once you are ready with everything, tap on the “Transfer” button to begin the transfer process. If everything goes well, you will see a progress bar on your device indicating how much data is transferred. Do not turn off your device to avoid losing any data or interruptions.

Step 6: Successful Android to iPhone Transfer

Once the transfer is complete, you will find the next setup screen on your iPhone. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the remaining process, such as setting up icon size, font weight, and more.

Check photos and other apps to see if all the data is transferred. You might find apps like WhatsApp already installed on your new iPhone with your message history. However, certain data takes time to show up on your screen.

You might be required to download certain apps on your iPhone to view the backed-up data. This is necessary if the data is important to you. If your backup data itself is too much and you are facing trouble managing storage, you can buy an external SSD and a connector (for USB-C); you can then transfer most of the data to it from your iPhone.
